Classrooms of The Alleghenies

Experience the classrooms of The Alleghenies with all there is to see, do and learn from in the vast outdoors the region has to offer.

Day 1

Begin your learning adventure with a tour of Prince Gallitzin State Park where environmental education specialists offers a wide variety of environmental education and interpretive programs seasonally. Through hands-on activities, guided walks and programs, participants gain appreciation, understanding and develop a sense of stewardship toward the natural and cultural resources of the park. Recreational programming includes interpretive kayak and pontoon boat tours of Lake Glendale. Curriculum-based environmental education field learning experiences are available for K – 12 school groups, youth organizations and homeschool associations.

All aboard at the recently renovated Gallitzin Tunnels Park and Museum!  The Tunnels Park exhibits a restored 1942 Pennsylvania Railroad N5C Caboose.  See the sleeping quarters, dining area, old fashioned pot bellied cooking and heating stove, cupola, air-brake system, lighting facilities, bathroom facilities, signal lights and an observation post looking down on the newly installed PRR Walkway.  The museum features a display of pictures depicting the community's industrial, social, and religious heritage and a 24 seat theater which has a schedule of programs focusing on railroads and railroad heritage.

Continue your railroad journey over the hill to the first railroad to circumvent the Allegheny Mountains, the Allegheny Portage Railroad which was the finishing piece of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal.  "The Portage," opened in 1834, marking the first time that there was one, direct route between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.  All things to all people, it served merchants, passengers, slaves in pursuit of freedom, and soldiers from the Mexican War.  Discover the story of the Allegheny Portage Railroad.  Learn about the early construction, including the building of the first railroad tunnel in America.  Experience travel in a different era and learn how this engineering marvel became obsolete in just twenty years by the building of the Horseshoe Curve.

Stay at the nearby Comfort Inn Ebensburg.

Day 2

Take a step back in time as you walk the grounds of Fort Roberdeau, Pennsylvania’s only Revolutionary War fort.  Experience life in the frontier days as reenactors portray life at that time- candle makers molding wax, bakers using the raw grains of the land for bread making, blacksmiths forging iron into tools, soldiers in uniform defending the fort and Native Americans trading goods with settlers.  Learn why it was important to protect the lead mining and smelting operation in the area and how the fort helped change the history of the nation.

Next, make your way to Indian Caverns, nestled in the hillside of Tussey Mountain and just over Spruce Creek.  Pennsylvania’s most historic cave is sure to “Wow” you at Mother Nature’s beauty.  This Ordovician limestone cave reaches depths of 140 feet with chambers up to 40 feet wide and 60 feet high with the largest sheet of flowstone in the northeast- "The Frozen Niagara."  Learn the history of the area through the Native American artifacts discovered through cave excavation.

Travel just outside of Huntingdon, PA to Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks.  Like Indian Caverns, Lincoln Caverns is a limestone cave with a wide variety of speleothems (cave formations), including delicate crystals, sparkling stalactites, and massive flowstones around every turn.  A wide variety of educational programs for Scouts, schools, youth groups and others are offered.  Experience the added bonus of the mysterious Whisper Rocks- the second half of the cave tour.

After a long day of exploring the depths of the earth, set your sights on the sky above at the Juniata College Observatory.  Built in 1986, the observatory contains a permanently mounted 12-inch reflecting computerized telescope outfitted with an electronic (CCD) camera.  Two 8-inch reflectors can be mounted on piers outside of the observatory for large-group viewing.  All ages are welcome as participants are able to view (seasonally) the various phases of the Moon, meteor showers, comets, solar and lunar eclipses as you’ve never seen before.

Stay at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Huntingdon Raystown Lake.

Day 3

Wake bright and early to discover Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center!  Located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, Shaver’s Creek is Penn State’s nature center, offering fun and educational environmental programs and events for students of all ages.  Guests are invited to visit the nature center, hike the trails, meet the birds of prey in the Raptor Center, and explore the hands-on exhibits and live reptiles in the Discovery Room.  There is no shortage of things to do at Shaver’s Creek- inspiring discovery since 1976!

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at a weather station?  How do meteorologists “predict” the future of weather?  Well, Accuweather in State College is just the place to see how the meteorologists work together to set the forecasts of the world.  The “floor” of Accuweather will make you think you’re watching NASA’s mission control- with countless meteorologists hustling about the floor looking at computer models, satellites, radars, designing graphics, and updating Accuweather.com.

Stay at one of the conveniently located group tour friendly hotels available in and around State College.

Day 4

Lastly, explore America's only all-water cavern, Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park, nestled in Central Pennsylvania's scenic Penn State Country. The cavern tour is a guided tour by motorboat on an underground stream.  Along the limestone corridors, stalagmites, stalactites, flowstone cascades and draperies decorate the interior rooms, while underwater, trout swim and jump for feed! The adjacent 1,600 acres offer carefully preserved natural habitat for North American animals, such as bears, wolves, elk, deer, bobcats, bison, longhorn cattle, mustangs, bighorn sheep as well as the Penn's Cave Icon, the mountain lion.  Challenge your sense of direction in Prospector Pete’s Miners Maze, a 4,800 square foot maze of twists, turns and check-points.
